Q: Since it was the deciding factor in whether the judges saved you, do you regret telling Simon that you didn’t care about his critique?
A: No regrets ever. I wouldn’t take anything back. I was happy to go the way I did. … I just was honest. I cared about the competition. I didn’t want people to misunderstand me not caring — I just didn’t care that Simon didn’t like my song. I couldn’t help but be honest.
Q: Simon was one of your biggest cheerleaders early on, but then he became your harshest critic. Do you think he turned on you a bit?
A: I think his opinion of me changed a little bit, and he was pretty hard on me. I think that he likes me, maybe just as much as he did but maybe just not for the competition. I got no beef with Simon, and I don’t think he has any with me.
Q: Were you at all relieved to be voted off?
A: As sad as I am that I’m leaving and I’m done with this show, there is a very big part of me that cannot wait to see my son. It’s been too long. I’m ready to hold him in my arms again. Part of me is ready.
Q: What was behind your wing flapping and cawing during the results show?
A: I love birds and bird noises, and I just decided that if I’m going out, I’m going out with a bang, and I’m just going to be myself. I flew the whole time!
Q: What did you learn from your “Idol” experience?
A: There’s always gonna be negative people or haters, if you will, trying to bring you down, but you just gotta forget about ‘em and move past it, always.
Q: During your initial audition, you seemed surprised that they put you through, and then you made it all the way to the finals. Did you ever think, “Maybe I could win this thing”?
A: I have always just kept the mentality of “Whatever’s supposed to happen will happen.” I never put any expectations on myself. I wanted to make the tour, but that was my only goal. I was just excited and wanted to enjoy the ride. Whatever happened, happened. No expectations.
Q: You mentioned on your AmericanIdol.com bio that you would love to be on Nick Jr.’s “Yo Gabba Gabba!” Why that show?
A: The second the show came out, I fell in love with it. It is just pure genius. If I could be on it, I would do anything. I’d do “Cool Tricks” or “The Super Music Friend Show.” I’d do anything. I’d do the “Dancey Dance.” Anything they want me to do, I would do it. I think they’re brilliant.
Q: Are you planning to get a tattoo to commemorate your time on “Idol”?
A: I definitely am. I’ve had a lucky ring that I’ve worn the entire time, and I’m going to have that tattooed on my ribs.

How are you feeling after what happened last night?
I am tired and very excited to see my son. It’s been a couple of months. Every minute that passes is harder.
You didn’t seem particularly sad. What were you thinking about?
I just woke up kind of knowing it was my time. I woke up with this feeling that I’d be going. So I decided to just have the best attitude that I could and get excited about what’s going to happen after.
So you were actually looking forward to moving on?
It’s never fun to get cut from a competition. I was excited to show America that I could belt songs out like the rest of them. I was bummed not to have that chance. But I get to go home to my son, so how am I’m feeling? It’s kind of a tossup.
Did you have a song picked out for next week?
I did. I was going to sing ‘Separate Lives’ by Phil Collins.
What’s the deal with the bird thing?
I love birds and I’m just a big dork. I love making animal noises, and sometimes people think I’m funny, and I just decided to make a couple people laugh. The two people that think I’m funny.
Was that an inside joke between you and Allison?
No, I just make noises all the time. All day yesterday I was like, ‘Guys, I think I’m going home. Please caw for me! Be my bird friends!’ And they were like, ‘Of course we will.’
During the elimination, your brother yelled ‘Broken record!’ to Kara and they squabbled off-camera. What happened there?
I didn’t get to see it. He told me about it later. I just think it’s hilarious. My brother’s just like me. He is who he is and he represents me. He can’t take it when someone’s tearing me down, so he voiced his opinion. I think he’s hilarious.
Talk to us about telling Simon that you didn’t care what he said.
I really didn’t mean to upset him. I had no idea that it was going to be like that. I didn’t want people to think I didn’t care about the competition. I just didn’t care that Simon didn’t like my song. I did care about what the judges thought because I wanted to keep progressing, but not personally for myself. If they don’t like what I do, that’s fine, but I’m not going to take it to heart, because I am who I am and I’m not going to change that. I sing how I sing, and if they don’t like it that’s cool. It’s not going to hurt my feelings.
What was your best moment?
Getting through ‘Walking After Midnight,’ because it was a flat-out miracle. It was absolutely insane. I don’t know how that happened. I was positive that I wasn’t going to be able to go on. Dress rehearsal an hour before I didn’t hit a single note, I was crying, I couldn’t sing at all. It was adrenaline. It was like an out-of-body experience. It was like watching myself. I don’t know how to explain it. It was really weird.
We’ve heard that the real Megan Joy is a real serious metal head.
I can’t say I’m a very serious one, but I truly love it. And I listen to it just as much as I listen to anyone else.
Did you want to let that side loose during ‘Idol’?
Well, I mean, I love listening to it, but I would never pick that music for myself. I would be featured in a metal song. If someone wanted me to sing a little part, I would. That would be awesome.
What’s your favorite metal band?
Cradle of Filth.
So you didn’t have in your mind that you wanted to one week do a Cradle of Filth song?
(Laughs) You know, if only they would have let me … . It could have been sick. Could have been sick!
What’s been the hardest part of being on the show?
Being away from my baby.
What about the process?
It was all really stressful, and sometimes I didn’t know if I could take anymore of it, but I don’t think anyone is given anything they can’t handle in life. If you’re thrown something I think you can handle it, and I managed to handle everything that they threw at me.
On elimination nights, you always seemed OK. You seemed maybe less hurt by judges than other contestants.
I love life, and I just don’t let people bring me down because I don’t have time for it. I don’t think anyone should have time for it. It’s up to us how we let people affect us. I try to take good from everything and be postive and happy.
You seem a much more playful group than in the past. Did you feel like you were a bunch of kids at a slumber party?
I did! We’re all goofy nerds, all the time.
Who did you bond with?
I’m close with them all, but Allison is my roomie and I have a soft spot for her.
Do you feel like this year the girls are being persecuted by the voters?
You know, we’re getting taken down one by one. But the guys are awesome, so I can’t say America is wrong because they’re really all incredible. I get excited for everybody, so when I’m on stage with Adam and every person in the audience is screaming his name, it just makes me happy because I love him and I think it’s great.
How do you feel about this publicity tour you’re about to embark on?
I’m all about it. Bring it on. Let’s do this. I’m probably not as prepared as I’d like to be, but I wasn’t even prepared to try out for ‘Idol’ in the first place.
How did you come to try out in the first place?
My family and friends made me. I was like, ‘I’ll never ever make it, this is ridiculous. There is no point, I’m just going to sit there for hours and not even make it past round one.’ My mind is blown. I cannot even believe what happened to me.
What’s next?
I’d love to make albums and try to write. I’ve never tried to write a song before. I hope that I can. Any doors that open, I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen.
What kind of album would you want to make?
I don’t know. Something beautiful, maybe a little dark. Something that people can fall in love with, fall asleep to, just beautiful music.
What do you wish people would ask you about but haven’t?
I don’t know. How much I love cartoons? I don’t know. I love all cartoons! I love little kid ones like on Nickelodeon, and I love adults ones like ‘Family Guy’ and ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘South Park.’ I love Pixar and DreamWorks. I love all of them.
What is the first thing you’re going to do when you get home?
I’m going to hug my son for as long as he will let me.
