Adam Lambert sat down with 20/20’s Chris Connolly Friday night to talk about his Rolling Stone cover, how he came out to his parents, and wanting to be in love.
Lambert, busy getting ready for the ‘Idol’ summer tour, was joined for part of the interview by his mother, who talked about supporting her son when he came out and how he used to love playing dress up.
Lambert, who said he’s only been in love once, also gave hope to his legions of female fans.
“I’ve been known to make out with girls from time to time. Couple drinks involved, you know, it’s fun. And who knows, maybe it’ll go further someday.”
This comment at the Huffington Post Gets right to the heart of the matter. The Adamants (fans) are claiming that Adam is so refreshingly honest, but he isn’t. Everything he has said and done has been an attempt to position himself as edgy and cool while the man behind the make-up is an insecure, immature, homely, painted man with low self-esteem and a hunger for fame.
His PR team is incompetent, clearly. His drinking, drug use and indiscriminate sexual adventures all paint the picture of a man trying too hard to be cool and willing to be dishonest in order to gain celebrity.
The comment:
O.k., as a gay man I cannot let this go. Adam’s comment re: making out with women and leaving it open to possibly going further in the future, is great for sales as teen girls and young women run out to purchase downloads and other “Adam” merchandise. What concerns me about his “honesty” is I think it is all a marketing ploy, but more importantly it sends the mythical message that homosexuality, or sexual orientation in general, is fluid and/or a choice. While it might be a choice for those in the limelight looking for media attention, the rest of us gay folks are trying very hard to live honest and “out” lives in order to show middle America that we deserve equal rights/marriage. In my opinion, Adam is doing far more damage to our national image then good. He most assuredly is NOT a spokesperson for the lesbian and gay fight for marriage equality. He is a spokesperson for his own agenda; fame and fortune.

“Stupid U”. Love your screen name,
fits you so well. Adam is a “Poser”, and has only his own best interests at heart, and although he is very talented, he doesn’t even come close to Clay. The fans of Clay have a saying “Idol Found, Game Over”. Since Season 2 it still remains true; DEAL!!!! Bucky1215(Quote)
Gay people like the one that wrote this article are stupid…why can’t Adam use himself to market himself like everyone else?…this so-called community is bullcrap…crap…I’m glad Adam doesn’t conform to the whole gay-rights things and is thinking of himself…this community is never satisfied anyway….oh, there are pre-idol pictures of Adam kissing girls, so the bi-curious thing is not BS….. stupid u(Quote)
Adam needs to temper his remarks, BUT, I still say he is a nice guy, with an absolutely spectacular voice and stage presence. Don’t know why people continue to try to bring this guy down. He is enormously talented, and was extremely polite and appreciative on the show.
I can think of far worse celebrities that get a pass. Why him???? maryn(Quote)
“He is a spokesperson for his own agenda; fame and fortune.”
That comment sums it up. Sandi(Quote)
He’s a fake, looking for fame. He is being coy, conniving and arrogant. I’m sick of him already. whatavoice(Quote)
That comment at Huffington Post nailed everything wrong with Adam’s little “marketing ploy”. IMO, he has been making a mockery of being gay since he started making it a game and how he said he didn’t speak up right after idol because “coming out” in Rolling Stone would be much cooler. emma(Quote)
In the Idolatry interview, Adam said he was a businessman. And it’s good business to keep both sexes interested. So, I’m not surprised that even though he came out, he also threw in the “bicurious” crap – this way he keeps the women still hoping they have a shot.
KA-CHING.

Adam doesn’t want to advocate for gay rights because his fans are predominantly straight. Who does he want to piss off less? The 90% of the population that will be relieved that he isn’t “totally gay” (the bi-curious claim and staying away from gay rights issues) or the 10% that is gay. He knows where the money is and it isn’t going to come from the gays. MJ(Quote)
Adam has a right to be here – and millions of people want to see and hear from him. Can you say the same about you? Leave this beautiful guy alone- go hate somewhere else – look at yourself in a mirror and see the ugly hate you have. I’ll pray for your soul Annie(Quote)
BS – he didn’t start the damn fire – bigoted people and news people started the whole damn gay crap. We, millions of fans, loved Adam from the start, he is the best singer Idol ever had and the bigoted conservatives can’t stand the fact that this guy is going to be a big, big star! They hate the fact that he controlled when and where he would answer the stupid question that has been hounding him since he started on AI. And all the news people wanted to sell their papers or have people watch their shows. Adam doesn’t have to have a marketing ploy, he has his voice and that will sell millions of albums. Leave him alone you bigoted bastards. We love Adam for Adam, a beautiful person with brilliant vocals and you will never take that away from him! Annie(Quote)
Give me a break. The guy is a wildly talented American Idol contestant, he’s not brokering Middle East peace. It’s crazy to take any of this that seriously. ellie(Quote)
He’s bi as in I hope these stupid bitches “buy” my bullshit and then “buy” my albums. frogcooke(Quote)
PHONY!!!!!!! OPPORTUNIST!!!!!! Enough already! Go away, Adam! StanB(Quote)
Wow. Your article is a low for gay people. Who are you to define what each and every gay person must do and feel? Adam doesn’t want to be a spokesperson for gay people because of people like you. He feels that that the gay community is made up of all kinds of people and “gay” people are not one and the same. You also discredit those of us who are Bi. He’s way more honest than you. Even straight people can be Bi-curious. Doesn’t make them any less straight. Chill out, meg(Quote)
Adam is dishonest in the same way that an actor will pretend to like Tofu in a commercial just for the paycheck. No, its worse than that because if he hated Tofu, at least it doesn’t have feelings to play with.
For Adam to pretend to be attracted to women is More dishonest because he is dangling hope where there is none, just to keep his female fans. MJ(Quote)
The comment you highlight states that Adam was not a spokesperson for the lesbian and gay fight for marriage, but for his own agenda. Maybe, but Adam has stated a few times he is not trying to be a civil rights activist, but is trying to be a singer.
Just because this person does not share the same feelings or think the same way, does not mean that Adam is being dishonest. He did imply that sexuality is fluid – and he was bi-curious, not bi-sexual. And he may feel that way. Plus he never said that it was a choice – that is definitely a leap that I did not get from the interview. If Honesty is a marketing ploy – is that a bad thing? mary(Quote)
