Adam Lambert: Flopping. Scared. Inevitable.

Adam Lambert is feeling the cold chill these days. He tells OK Magazine about his fear, but he has a few loyal (read crazy) fans who have proudly written to him on his fan club that they will buy buy buy to make him happy.

One pictured her 35 cd collection along with a picture of him fondling a naked girl. I’m not sure what message the fan is trying to send him. More naked girl action, less kissing boys please? Kind of odd considering its no secret he’s gay.

Another fan pictures her 38 and climbing cd count.

This is what OK had to say.

Following a controversial performance at the American Music Awards, Adam Lambert speaks out about his fears for the future and gets some much needed defense from his American Idol alum while catching a few performances at Z100’s Jingle Ball concert last night.
Lambert admits to being scared, “That people won’t want to buy the rest of my music; that people will stop being interested. I think that’s my biggest fear,” the 26-year old vocalist tells reporters on Friday in NYC.

Accompanied by his former cast mates on American Idol, the very talented Allison Iraheta, 17, was on hand to defend Adam’s AMA concert.

“As a performer myself, I know that when you’re onstage, you give it your all, and that’s what he did,” Iraheta reveals to reporters after seeing Taylor Swift, Justin Beiber, and John Mayer rock out at Jingle Ball, “I don’t think anyone should’ve been surprised.”

And just in case anyone still doubted the high-pitched runner up, American Idol winner Kris Allen similarly came to Lambert’s rescue.

“I thought it was Adam being Adam,” Allen, 24, gushes to reporters at Madison Square Garden, “Obviously, he couldn’t do that stuff on Idol, and so you’re getting to see the real Adam now.”

With his breakout album For Your Entertainment, released in November, having only sold around 200,000 copies, Adam confesses to reporters that all he can do is. “Continue being positive and try to live in the moment.”

  • Adam I’ll keep buying your cds… but im not going to spend my money on 38 cds and prove ima crazed fan! Adam if you feel good when your up on that stage. be confident and believe in yourself or your fear will come true and you’ll be at the bottom. Believe in yourself, ignore tha paparazzi and keep moving forward. I’m gettin my friends hooked on you and many others are starting to love you! Just believe in yourself… Because if your not confident you won’t be able to make a bigger statment and prove that your someone bigger than people believe you to be. I believe in the good in people and your a great person so keep up the GOOD work that your ALREADY doing. ignore what other people say. Stand with pride and strut with confidence and keep your head up high. :)

Only 200,000 copies? That’s great for a first week. Plus this is an old post and Adam’s sales are about a half a million. He has an amazing voice and he will grow as he performs. Idol can make anyones perseption skewed.

There used to be a slight chance of me becoming a fan of Adam’s voice (I never thought he was good looking or sexy) when he sang Mad World on AI, but I never heard him singing again on AI, just screaming. And after AI when he started showing everybody who he really was, I also started to feel more and more disgusted until the point that I couldn’t stand him.

  • stargazer

I guess the surprise to me is that he is now groveling. He has spent so much time since AI telling fans in many ways that if you don’t like me I don’t need you as a fan. Well, it seems the stuff has hit the fan and he does need folks to buy his cd. Seems that he thought he was this rock god superstar and he could manage without moms and pops and kids, the bible belt and the so uncool middle America. Most performers realize that they need fans whether they are cool fans or not. His calculations appear to be wrong. He lost me as a fan after AI when he showed his true obnoxious self.

He is an interesting character to follow though.

  • Me

I LOVED him on Idol too…But he isnt the same person that was on Idol..His ego is bigger then his head…and he doesnt care about anyone but Adam..I still think he is mad talented…But his attitude and lack of respect for anyone is ruining his career..If he wants to be big..then he is going to have to change alot…

  • priscilla

I liked Adam on the show but now can’t stand him. I like his song Whaddya want from me but personally dislike him, I won’t be buying it.

His comments are egotistical for someone who hadn’t even put out a CD yet. He bought into his own hype.

He needs to be scared, he’s really screwed up the opportunities that have been handed to him on a silver platter.

CC: MJ,Can I make a suggestion? Many of us really liked“Who sang it best”, where you put up audio only songs & we say who we liked best & try to guess who they may be.Wouldn’t it be fun to have a Christmas version? So many idols & other well-known artists have done Christmas songs.

Good idea! I’ll get to work.

  • pixie

I think we shouldn’t presume that the majority, or even many, of those who attended the AI tour would of been aware of Adam’s background and had seen those videos on Youtube. I think his performance then, which was tame compared to what he did on the AMA, might of been a bit of a surprise to the more family friendly oriented. Also, my experience is that the more devoted, and therefore aware, fans are the ones most likely to make the effort to pay and be in the front rows. I would hazard a guess that the ones who would of been more likely to be concerned at how racy his performance was were probably more in the back and up in the stands. Now, it is very possible that many of them were cool with what he did, but I think that he may be losing a good portion of his initial fans from American Idol… which may be his goal. The trick will be picking up new fans that will enjoy the direction he is now taking. This may be a problem as the demographic I think he is aiming for don’t have a lot of respect for those off of AI. He may very well accomplish this move, but success is not guaranteed.

notafainnNE – That may all be true. I, too, think he shot himself in the foot by going too far in his AMA performance. And by “too far” I mean letting the adrenaline get the best of his singing voice, giving the finger (and making the face) at the end, and “lingering” too long with the SOS.

The SOS was fine with me, but I just think that moment should have lasted about a 1/2 sec and not about the 3-4 secs it actually did (not to mention he really ground it in). He should have played it more non-chalantly, like Pink did when she performed “God Is A DJ” at the Billboard Awards in 2004. There was NO uproar then. Not even a peep! Everything else was fine with me! Not a problem.

Now, concerning the AI tour…we’ve all seen the YouTube’s (if not actually in person). I clearly remember on just about EVERY stop on the tour, FANS were throwing underwear, and SEX TOYS on STAGE during Adam’s performances. And Adam handily (and graciously) incorporated them into his act EACH and EVERY time! If AI fans or curious Adam lookie loos did not Google him before they went to see him live in concert, then certainly they (most concert goers, not all) had the chance to YouTube his AI concert performances BEFORE they purchased tickets. I don’t EVER remember anyone crying foul over his performances then – which were quite sexy and provocative! That’s NOT to say that they were on par with his AMA performance, but one look at “The Zodiac Show” and one could see just how far he’s willing to go.

Concerning his “attitude and performances”, it was clear to me that he was in character. A character that was befitting to the lyrics in the song “For Your Entertainment”. The Worldwide audience of American Idol got to see Adam’s “attitude and performances” for about 20 weeks or so on AI, and then for another 6 months prior to his debut release. It’s hard for me to erase ELEVEN (11!) months of getting to know Adam through his “attitude and performances” on American Idol, GMA,, Early Show, Today Show, AOL Sessions, Tonight Show, Late Night, countless TV, internet and magazine interviews, etc, etc, etc….and then pronounce a FINAL and UNWAVERING judgement on him, his talent, his career, and his innerworkings by ONE (1!) 3 minute, adrenaline fueled, expectation/pressure weighted, performance!!!

And yes, I agree with you that he WILL have a hard time selling CDs and concert tickets. MOST music artists out today are having a hard time selling CDs and concert tickets…even the indomidable Beyone and Madonna who’ve had a hold on concert sales for some time now. When the holiday season promo of Adam’s CD on network TV ends, he will have to rely solely on his music to sell his discs…not his disarming and charming personality, smile and sense of humor (he’s a good interview!) coupled with a visual performance (he’s a very visual artist). And without a radio hit right now (radio isn’t playing him nearly enough, if not at all), sales and interest will surely suffer.

I somehow expect radio interest to pick up though once XMas is over since his new single “If I Had You” is very NYE friendly. In January they’re breaking him in Japan and the UK (which seems very Adam friendly) and he’s going on tour next Spring (so there’ll be more TV promotion for the tour, with possibly more singles from the CD sung on performances). I think, all things considering, all is well with Adam. He still has both of his legs to stand on and it seems he’s working to do everything he can to stay on his feet.

  • notafaninNE

Regarding the AI tour, I do believe many people there wanted to see Adam. However his attitude and perfomances since then (AMA) has turned many people off who liked him on the AI Tour. They will not be buying his cd nor will they be going to his concerts. I really believe he will have a hard time selling cd’s and concerts. I think he is in for a rude awakening and he has no one to blaim but himself. I know he still has devoted fans, but I am just calling it as I see it.

  • Leslie

Thank you Beauty for being intelligent.

Mary, clearly, Adam does not just have 1/30 of the fans he thinks he does. It’s a very small group of people that shop like this. Where on earth did you get the idea that the vast majority of his fans buy 30 copies. I bought 2 copies.

January, I wouldn’t worry about any concert tickets. Did you go see the Idol tour? He was the main draw. BY FAR. Now obviously, he won’t be doing an arena tour; most of the other Idols didn’t start their solo careers with one. But if even half the Adam fans that went to the Idol tour go and see him solo, he’ll have healthy sales for a theater tour.

  • Beauty

BTW, there are, and have always been in the last 20 years, MASSIVE buying campaigns for particular artists, ESPECIALLY when American Idol came on the scene! There have been “buying parties” and other organized buying campaigns for the likes of Clay Aiken, Fantasia Barrino, Ruben Studdard and many others (check the archives of their fan sites).

It doesn’t matter if a few fans bought 10’s of CD’s. They are in the super miniscule minority! Just because they take pictures and boast about it over the internet doesn’t mean that this fringe group is larger than it is, nor does it represent any meaningful #s in Adam’s Soundscan #s. If anything, from what I’ve read on Adam’s sites, his fans are actually using tactics such as suggestive sales to fellow line waiting customers, replenishing end cap displays and notifying sales persons of depleted stock. If any extra copies are bought it was because their friends and/or collegues intimated that they liked Adam, but were hesitant to buy him. Thus the extra copies were bought as XMas gifts. Nothing out of the ordinary.

  • Beauty

Naturally he, as a new artist with MAJOR obstacles in front of his mainstream likeability, should feel this way. Most people who have very intense, type A, personalities who focus on winning are naturally afraid of failing. Who wouldn’t be, no matter what the career path they endeavor on? Starting something new (especially if it is your dream) can be scary (especially if your success depends on someone else’s fickle opinion, attention span, or finances)!

I came accross this article by blogcritics.org. It has a very sobering tale of how record companies gamble on music artists. Here’s some of it:

“In The Future of Music, David Kusek and Gerd Leonhard’s fascinating tome on, well, the future of music, we find this enlightening fact:

Approximately 32,000 new cds are released each year. Only about 250 of those new discs will sell over 10,000 copies. Fewer than 30 of those 32,000 discs will go platinum (ship more than 1M).

That, according to Kusek and Leonhard, means that only 1/10 of 1% of new artists is likely to hit it big.

1/10 of 1% . . . that’s .001. That’s so miniscule, Power Point probably explodes if you try to display that as a pie chart.

Clearly, as our music futurist friends write:

Most record companies today market artists based on a “see if it sticks” approach. They put a hundred different artists on the market, knowing that less than five of them will ever break even. They hope for that one act that will hit the big-time so that they recoup the entire investment across their whole roster of acts.

Rolling Stone, under the gloomy title “Record Biz Still Sinking,” quotes industry suits noting that budget cuts have led to cuts in the number of people working to promote any given album. Just like with movies and television shows these days, the execs have much, much less patience with records that are slow to develop a following. ”

Well…given all of that, it seems that Adam Lambert isn’t doing so bad after all. It is, as it’s always been (with him at least), a case of super hyped expectations over the reality of the situation. Which is to say (as quoted by another poster, “Get Real”):

“It’s silly compare Adam Lambert to the likes of Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift who have mainstream appeal. Adam is very polarizing, his singing/performing style is loved or hated to extreme levels. His sexuality is not universally accepted by everyone. There is no male pop star like him on the music scene today.

The media may be all over him, but it doesn’t mean he can become a succcessful recording artist immediately. The majority of Idol viewers are over 35 and those people are more conservative than they are accepting of someone like Adam. He also does not easily appeal to the young teens because his image is too mature and blatantly sexual for 12 year olds. It’s easy to dismiss his sales but you need to acknowledge the fact that he is facing some big challenges.”

  • January

I have to agree that it does not bode well for Adam if his fans are buying CD’s in those numbers. It makes Adam look bad, and his fans desperate in their attempts to promote him. It will be interesting to see how well Adam sells tickets for his concerts at this rate. I think the promoters will end up being very disappointed.

  • Just Me

The comments on that article are so ridiculously funny. I really wonder if some of those Glamberts and Sparkle Cows (and whatever other stupid name they have for themselves) realize just how ridiculous they sound.

They are NOT helping anyone take Adam seriously. Not even close.

  • mary

I just read a few comments on the article. Glamberts are unbelievable, nothing seen before.

  • mary

I must be demoralizing to Adam knowing that he has only 1/30th of 250,000 fans, which is less than 8,500. Technically that is their message. Posting those pics on the Internet make Adam look really bad, and also make his OTT fans the laughing stock of the Internet. Nobody in the history of music has done it before. Those 250,000 copies is not even a real number based on this. IMO it should feel better selling 80,000 copies in real numbers than 200,000 in a forced and fake way.
Glamberts should accept the reality and start behaving in a more normal way.
Charisma can not be forced. Charisma is innate, there is nothing in the world than can buy it, not even billions of dollars.
Adam does not have that charisma that AI people believe he had, add that to his behavior, and these are the results.

  • Leslie

    Hi Pixie!

Yes, that part of the post, I agree is crazy. If a fan does this, why photograph it? It doesn’t prove respect for Adam, it proves that you feel sorry for him and feel that you gotta help him out. Embarrassing for Adam and the fans in question.

  • pixie

I have to agree with Marty that fans sending Adam pictures showing how many albums they bought may not be as reassuring to him as they think. I’m sure he appreciates their devotion, but I think he also would prefer that 30 different people had bought those albums instead.

It is true that a number of different fan bases have done multiple CD buying, though I think this is the first time I’ve seen any fans actually send in pictures of what they have bought.

  • Leslie

    Marty,

I am not personally rude with anyone and I don’t call ANYBODY names. I make a point of not name calling. Please show me any thread and quote where I am being mean to anyone who posts here.

And what have I said that is “horrid”????????

What is REALLY horrid is that I point out that the blogger is LYING to you and instead of being mad at him/her, you’re mad at me. Shoot the messenger or what! And yes, sometimes I can be over-the-top. JUST LIKE MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO POST ON THIS SITE.

  • Marty

Leslie…..you throw out the rudeness and jabs, but then can’t take it. If you go to ANY site and post in such a horrid way, you will get people who don’t like what you say.

Had you given the same facts without being over the top, perhaps people won’t think you were an over-the-top fan.

I have been a fan of many Idols and I have to say, I have NEVER seen people buy 30 some CDs. The sad part is if there are 100 that have bought 30 CDs, that means that Adam has not really done too well selling albums. It certainly doesn’t show his popularity.

Yes, people do buy multiple CDs……to give to people, but not to brag about and show Adam that he actually has less fans than he thought.

  • Leslie

    Danielle,

Why are you making this a personal attack on me? I don’t insult you.
Avoiding the REAL issue much? WHY AM I NUTS? For pointing out at deliberate misquote of MJ’S?

There is no excuse for lying to your readers. I’m just calling MJ out about it.
You guys are the ones who are paying DAILY attention to someone that you don’t even like. That’s nuts.

  • Danielle

Leslie, you’re just as nuts as each and every Glambert fan. Pretty soon that’s all he’ll have left. No sane people buy into his crap.

  • Leslie

So, your link does work. Why did you change the words?

  • Leslie

    Sorry,

I hit the enter button too soon.

NICE FREAKING EDIT JOB ON THE OK ARTICLE, MJ. You edited it to suit your purpose. Link your readers to the REAL article, if you are honest.
The wording they used used is having ALREADY sold 200,000 copies. You changed that to “only sold”.

And some of your gullible reader think that you just reprint mainstream articles. Wow……..just WOW.

  • Leslie

    MJ,

I heard in numerous places online that “If I had U” is the next single.

    Nice FREAKING

  • MJ

What makes you think he’ll get more singles released?

  • Leslie

OK is wrong about the sales figures. Week 1 and 2 would total about 250,000 copies. Not fabulous, but nothing to sneeze at either. More single releases and an upcoming tour should do a lot to up the sales figures. After only 2 weeks, the CD is half way to gold.

  • Leslie

So you seriously think that Adam is the only singer who has fanatical fans that buy multiple copies of their CD’s? Of course that is what you think. Because your hatred for Adam has driven you insane. It probably wasn’t a far drive. LOL.
