America Freaks Out Over ‘Idol’

(September 4, 2002)
Could a bona fide pop star be made on live television with the help of the American viewing public? Why not, thought TV producer Simon Fuller, who launched a U.S. version of his hit British show “Pop Idol” in the summer of 2002. Texas girl-next-door Kelly Clarkson won “American Idol’s” first season and went on to become one of the decade’s top-selling artists. Platinum powerhouses such as Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson followed, proving that democracy, music and three months of “Survivor”-style competition could indeed transform unknown dreamers into chart-topping superstars.

I agree with you Mary2, I cant stand Lady GAGA she is a weirdo to me!! But whatever lol! I also agree that Some of the Idol are some of the best singers out there..by far not karaoke..they are natural talents and like you said..Clay doesnt need all the help to make him sound better! He is a natural born talent..Thats one of the things I love about him.. I also like Kelly and I like Carrie!

I cant wait until we hear about Clays new CD…I so excited about that..I cant wait until we can see him live again..Its be wayyyyyyyy to long!!

    Happy New Year! :)

Do not care for Lady Ga Ga myself. I like singers that sing with emotion and not all the glitter & flash to get attention. Which In my opinion takes attention away from the singer and the voice. With all the help these singers get now with their voices its hard to tell who can really sing.I think it covers up the real voice with all the help they get. Some people like it, I do not.
Clay Aiken is my favorite I enjoy him the most he can sing cannot wait until his new album in 2010. As far as the other Idol’s mentioned I’ve come to enjoy some of Kelly’s songs lately plus some of her older songs and I’m glad she is doing so well she does not need any help, her voice says it all. Carrie was accepted right from the start and has done well for herself I’m not a fan but she can sing and has a very nice voice. Not interested in the others myself but they are doing great and they can sing without the electro stuff they use now to cover up a lot of the other singers voices.I often wonder why they call Idol’s kareoke singers and they get critized for coming from Idol but in my opinion they all sing alot better then some of the people that are on the charts today. Most of all the people that are mentioned in this article from Billboard.
I was a big fan of Elvis Presley’s he sang and had an awesome voice but that’s for another day.

Thank you MJ for bringing these articles to our attention, it is appreciated very much.
I like your new setup here, looks good. Happy New Year!!

In an article highlighting outstanding American Idol contestants, I fail to see what brought “Lady Ga Ga” to mind. Way to change the subject Yue. Your “off topic” inquiry sure killed any discussion about the REAL topic. I personally know nothing about her, but I admire the subject matter intended by MJ, and the AI entertainers who were recognized in the article. Thanks MJ.

I agree she is kind of OTT, I’m not into that type of entertainment, but if so many people are interested she must be good.

Well, she’s interesting to say the least. Kinda reminds me of Madonna in her younger days……..I find Lady GaGa way over the top, not sure she can really sing, but she is certainly thought provoking in an odd sort of way.

Although not my cuppa, she seems to be the epitome of what people like in ‘music’ these days.

Sorry about how horribly off-topic this is, but I don’t know where else to ask:

What do you people think about Lady GaGa?
